Il settore include competenza di dispositivi, circuiti, apparati e sistemi elettronici progettati e realizzati sulla base delle specifiche, delle normative e dei costi fissati dalle applicazioni specifiche; caratterizzazione e collaudo mediante misure di prestazioni e di affidabilità degli oggetti progettati. Le competenze includono in particolare dispositivi a semiconduttore per bassa e per alta frequenza, circuiti, microcircuiti, architetture ed algoritmi per l’elaborazione delle informazioni, sensori, attuatori e microsistemi, strumentazione elettronica, nanotecnologie, dispositivi e circuiti nanoelettronici, dispositivi e circuiti per applicazioni industriali e di potenza, dispositivi e circuiti per la conversione e la produzione di energia, optoelettronica, dispositivi fotonici, efficienza energetica di circuiti e sistemi, strumenti informatici per la progettazione assistita, ecc.). Inoltre le comptenze si estendono alle applicazioni dei sistemi elettronici, che dettano anche le specifiche per il progetto, la realizzazione e la qualità (nella moderna accezione del termine), come, in particolare l’elaborazione e la trasmissione delle informazioni; l’elettronica industriale e di potenza; l’elettronica per la salute, l’auto, l’ambiente, il turismo, i beni culturali, la casa e lo spazio.
